Idyllic white beaches with palm trees, infinity pools by the ocean, charming food markets or hysterically decorated hotel rooms. While scrolling through my Instagram feed, especially in high holiday season, I come across the most incredible vacation photos. Did all my friends just stumble upon these amazing hidden gems while they were travelling? Probably not, since ‘Instagrammability’ is becoming the number 1 criterion for millennials when choosing a holiday destination.

Immersive Instagram
Choosing a holiday destination based on climate or costs is so generation X. Millennials tend to plan their trips based on photogenic locations that will ‘wow’ their Instagram followers. The more original the pictures, the better. Therefore, it seems that the more unique locations are becoming more popular. For instance: @inhetvliegtuig travelled to the inlands of the Alentejo in Portugal with its charming white houses, historic buildings and terracotta terraces, instead of the classic beach destinations at the Atlantic coast. Looking at this picture, you can just feel the sun on your skin and it makes you want to dive right into that perfect pool.

This is one of the private gardens at @casadesantiago. One of the most unique private houses we stayed in. Built on top of a village in the Alentejo, right next to a church. The house has 8 bedrooms, multiple living rooms and endless Portugese antiques. Every item has it’s own story and it almost feels like you sleep in a museum. You can book the house with friends, your family or with a group of history and art lovers at @tripwixvacation. . . . #privatehouse #luxurytavel #santiagodocacem #alentejo #visitportugal #visitalentejo #houserental #privategarden #church #antique #historylovers #privatepool #housesofportugal #portugesehouse #luxuryrentals #tripwix #tripwixtravel #tripwixvacation

Talking about immersive pictures… take a look at this shot by @reishonger in the mountains of Les Menuires. Can you feel the urge to jump on that board and slide down the crispy fresh snow? This spot is very instagrammable with its views over other summits and slopes. As a follower you can see yourself sitting on top of the world. Climbing all the way up to the top to take the picture is definitely worth it.

It is not all sunshine and rainbows
Sunshine and clear blue skies always do well, but photos with dark clouds or grungy looking sceneries make for even more interesting pictures. Take a look at this stunning view of Lac du Bourget in Savoie Mont Blanc, where the bright yellow raincoat only adds to the dramatic cloudy skies.

And how about this gorgeous photo by photography blogger @mylenecybele . She woke up early to catch the moody morning mist in the Stavanger Fjord in Norway. Although it gives you an almost melancholic feeling it still makes you want to book a ticket to the fjords right away!

Modern travel agents
So, if people are booking their holidays based on pictures they have seen in their Instagram feed, no wonder that the role of influencers is more important than ever. They are the tastemakers and modern version of travel agents. At Check-In PR we love working together with talented influencers who create the best content for the destinations we represent. Anything to make sure that you get inspired for your next trip. Have you decided what your next destination is going to be?
