On the 5th of August 2016 the time was finally there: the kick off of the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Although the sporters have lived up to the moment already for 4 years, the grey masse has just woken up from a deep sleep. We Dutchies missed the World Championship football, so the orange clothing was still hidden in the closet. But now we are awake, just like all the marketing and communication professionals who start playing the sociolympic games on the world wide web.

Although the number of ‘Olympic’ campaigns decreased in comparison to the campaigns of the games in London, and marketeers have to be cautious when using the hashtag #Rio2016 (something with official sponsors of the Olympic Games), the Olympic Games are a popular topic online. Some interesting social posts I found online:

Daphne Schippers predicted her participation at the Olympic Games already 7 years ago, in the Dutch televisionshow for kids: Zappsport:

LindaTV gave us a ‘behind the scene’ in the Holland Heineken house. Great move to build up the tention before the opening!

Grolsch dared to react on the disqualification of Yuri van Gelder during the first week of the Olympic Games
