And there it is, that noisy space with people you don’t know, dressed to impress, talking loud, trying to sell their businesses. The well-known network event. Drinks, good food, and often at an incredible location. Why is it than, that most of us don’t like to join these events, and look up to them as necessary evil? As part of my job, I attend a lot of these events, so “Networking is my middle name”. Ok, that is a lie, but I really learned to appreciate the events and meeting new interesting people. Ofcourse it isn’t the same as having drinks with your friends or partying with your bestie, because it is still called work, but I’m sure you can have fun with these tips:
How to enjoy networking
1 . Be prepared: dress up well, but be careful to not be overdressed. One eyecatcher piece always attracts the eye of people in the room, so use this, but don’t over do it. In the right outfit you will feel way more confident about yourself, which will do you good!
2. Look for people in the room with an open attitude and be aware of your own non-verbal communication. What do I mean by that? Well, don’t cross your legs as well as your arms, turn your body towards the people in the room with the same posture and.. smile! Everyone is more attractive with a gentle smile on his or her face.
Ready to get started…
3. If you don’t know a lot of people, just name it when starting a conversation with someone: “I don’t know a lot of people here, can I join you?”. Followed by a positive conversation about what you do and why you do it.
4. It might be an ‘open door’, but keep in mind that you’re on a mission. Don’t drink and don’t eat too much. This might give a wrong impression of who you are and why you are attending the event. You don’t want to become that guy or girl who always shows up for the free drinks and diner.. 😉
5. And last but not least…. Keep your promisses to the people you meet. Did you tell someone you’ll send information about what you do? Do it. Did you promise to introduce someone to your partner? Don’t forget it! In many industries, you’ll keep on meeting the same people over and over again. So cherish these contacts, you never know..
Well I guess that is it.. Curious to learn how your next network event did go!
