Summer is just around the corner and so are the next summer hits, popping up like mushrooms in an autumn forest. Happy rhythms and topics like sun, beach and exotic holiday destinations are the main ingredients for summer hits. What if a top 10 song makes  featured destination even a bigger hit? Are summer tunes a new way of destination marketing?

1. Summer in Zoutelande

The Dutch band Bløf covered the German song ‘Frankfurt oder’ , invited the Belgian singer Geike Arnaert to sing along and a new hit was born: Zoutelande. This song is about love, about the cold Dutch weather and about a small town in Zeeland called Zoutelande. The single was released in October 2017 and it slowly became a number one hit in both The Netherlands and Belgium. Local entrepreneurs, hotels and restaurants noticed a massive growth in the number of tourists in the months after that. Zoutelande became a more popular destination than ever before (source: and was pinned onto the Dutch and Belgian holiday maps for 2018.

2. Despacito in Puerto Rico

It is a fact: everybody knows the summer hit ‘Despacito’. In 2017 this song became THE summer hit of the year and all around the world people where dancing on the summer beats of Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber… and massively traveled to Puerto Rico! The number of tourists to Puerto Rico even grew with 45% (source: research / This summer song not became a worldwide summer anthem but also became free marketing for the destination, just like in the next example.

3. The Champs-Elysees, Notre Dame and the Seine

‘Praat Nederlands met me, even Nederlands met me….’ – Kenny B. dominated the Dutch music lists for the first time with his summer song about Paris. His music video on YouTube was the number 1 video of 2015 and received more than 20 million views. Never before the Dutch audience liked a Dutch video that much.
